Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
