No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
