Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
