Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
